We forget about our welcome flows. They're easy to forget when they don't work.

People open your welcome emails and sometimes, they reply, but you don't see new readers immediately signing up for a paid subscription. And you don't believe that can really happen...because you've never seen it.

Your welcome flow CAN convert people right away. I know that it's possible because mine does and I've interviewed several indie publishers who see similar results. Someone subscribes to the newsletter, opens your first welcome email and joins the paid subscription. Within minutes.

The problem is that a lot of publishers use generic language in their welcome emails. "Support indie journalism," "Upgrade to paid" and—my personal favorite—"some housekeeping."

Sending your brand new readers vague nonsense like this is absolutely killing any chance you had of winning them over.

Scrap the base template in your automation software and write something that motivates your readers to go paid.
