Growing your audience alone is living on hard mode.
Even if you have a team, you’re often better off getting some help from other journalists and writers than trying to bring in every single new reader yourself.
So, how do you do that? And make it easy?
You either need to pick a priority partner OR you need to pick a priority promo mechanic.
By that I mean, promote with the same publisher over and over again or choose one spot where you run promotions and you can easily swap out partners.
To give you an easy on ramp for cross promotion, Liz Kelly Nelson and I are running a Cross Promo Challenge and we’re starting a network of potential partners for you.
It all kicks off this Thursday with our Cross Promo Party where I’ll match you based on audience and topic with other journalists and writers you could be promoting with. If you’ve never been to one of my matched up mixers, you’re in for a treat. Plus, I invited Brazil-based musician Benjamín Mora to play for us live in between rounds.

This week’s cross promo method
I’ll be covering different ways you can cross promote all month during our Cross Promo Challenge. This week’s method is Newsletter Ad Swaps.
Do you do a links roundup in your newsletter? Have a classifieds section? Want to use your ad space for something when you don’t have ads to run? Then, you have a perfect spot to include newsletter partners.

Take part in the Cross Promo Challenge
Liz and I are challenging you to place TWO promotions of any kind by June 30. Here’s how to do it:
- Choose 1 or 2 partners (From our network, at the party or on your own)
- Run 2 promotions of any kind (It really can be any kind of link, shout out or swap and you can run them both for the same partner or they can be different. Look out for more tips in this post. I’ll be adding them all month!)
- Submit your 2 promotions here to compete in the challenge!
Everyone who submits their promotions by June 30 will be entered to win one of three prizes:
